NYSC vs Nigerian Army
Between NYSC and Nigerian Army
Whatever our beloved country, Nigeria becomes in the nearest future largely depends on what is handed down to the young ones by those who have something to pass on (be it positive or negative).
Uninterestingly, many ‘elders’ have limited their reasoning to the present alone and that’s what they intend to pass on to those coming after them- a limited scope of reasoning.
Mr Okafor was my Advance Measurement Lecturer back in school, I recall one of his few words “an average white man thinks about tomorrow”. Little wonder why the white tend to rule over the black...
Just so you know (or a reminder, at least) 45% of the entire Nigeria population are below 18, invariably, they are children. The very thoughts of the hardship, torture, violence and other atrocities these young innocent ones are subjected to daily, saddens my heart.
You will recall the story of Mrs. Adayi’s daughter- Patience. 14 years old Patience Adayi was abducted in Sokoto, brain-cultured and forcefully islamized by her neighbors, now it's more saddening her present condition is unknown.
Cannot but mention the kidnapping of many innocent girls by the insurgents (Boko Haram) to perpetrate evil and violence in the country.
In neighbouring Kano state, the gory tale of Ese has again smeared Nigeria’s image again. Thanks to the media for making it clearer. Just like patience, Ese is 14 years old, a Christian who had a spree of ‘bad’ days since she was abducted from her home in Bayelsa State to far away Kano State. Ese was kept from her parents, forced to convert to Islam, married off to an old man against her will and hidden in the Emir of Kano’s palace.
Just a week ago, three pupils of the Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary, Ikorodu, Lagos were kidnapped and taken to a still unknown destination....
Like these three aren’t enough for Nigerians, to stand against this ugly act self-destruction. Well, the fourth has come and maybe someone smells the fifth.
I guess Fela's “unknown soldiers” are back but this time to rape... Less than a week ago, another rape incidence greeted Kaduna State. A Government student reportedly confessed to have been raped by 4 soldiers while returning from a church program in the evening and efforts has been made to sweep this matter under the carpet.
As much as I trust the Nigeria Army as a system, I wish it would be made clear that being a soldier doesn't make everything done right...
In patriotic reaction to the rape incidence, a serving Corps Member in Kaduna has been held hostage in Kachia axis of the state’s barrack. Colleagues have been denied the right to air their views and peacefully raise awareness under the phrase “you are anti-Islamic people”.
While the unfortunate girl is speculated to be undergoing serious brainwashing by the said soldiers in a bid to conceal the obvious, Corper Ope was located, arrested, brutally punished and still in hostage for exposing the atrocities committed by these irresponsible set of the military.
UNICEF’s statistics that approximately seven children are killed violently everyday seems truer than before.
The situation in our country today gives cause for concern and raises many questions about precisely where we are heading. The Government had better find a lasting solution to all of these. It's high time!
Concerned agencies, media organizations, activism groups and individuals, not leaving out the National Youth Service Corps should also stand up for what they have professed, bringing the soldiers to book and releasing the Corp Member from there custody and without further threat.
